Plans to extend workers’ rights
It has been reported this month that the Government plans to extend workers’ rights in line with some of the recommendations set out in the recent Taylor Review.
The proposals are thought to include:
A new right for gig economy workers to request a temporary or fixed-hours contract after 12 months;
- Repeal of the Swedish derogation, which enables employers to pay agency workers less than their permanent staff;
- Legislation to clarify employment status tests to streamline tax and employment legislation
- Financial penalties for employers that fail to provide paid holiday; and
- A new right to notice periods and compensation for cancelled shifts.
It sounds like some big changes are on the horizon and great news, not just for workers but for HR and legal professionals who have to grapple daily with the various tests and case law relating to worker status.
Let’s hope we get some clear guidance!
